Axium Healthcare Pharmacy Sponsors Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute Training Seminar Series
Orlando, Florida (PRWEB) May 09, 2016 -- Axium Healthcare Pharmacy today announced that it is sponsoring a science seminar series for postdocs and other young researchers at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP). The Axium Healthcare Trainee Seminar Series is designed to enhance professional development of young researchers, many of whom will play an important role in discovering innovative therapies for rare diseases and chronic conditions such as diabetes and metabolic disorders.
Chronic disease is projected to increase for people of all ages in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 40 percent of all Americans (133 million) live with one or more chronic conditions and by 2020, the incidence will increase to 157 million. Of those affected, 81 million people will contend with multiple conditions such as diabetes and related complications including heart disease, neuropathy and kidney disorders.
Innovation in medical research and drug discovery is a vital component in the advancement of therapies that prevent and treat chronic conditions. Postgraduate training of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research associates—the young scientists that conduct the majority of laboratory experiments under the direction of senior principle investigators— is critical to drive this innovation. The Axium Healthcare Trainee Seminar Series commenced in April 2016 and will cover such topics as diabetic heart disease, genetics and obesity, the metabolic basis of heart failure and discovery of diagnostic biomarkers for melanoma. The series encourages personal development by providing young scientists with opportunities to share their research with colleagues and mentors, and receive valuable feedback on presenting and defending their work.
“Scientific innovation and collaboration are at the heart of advancing the capabilities of specialty pharmacy and what we can do to improve health outcomes for millions of people managing chronic conditions,” said Axium Healthcare Pharmacy President and CEO Mark Montgomery. “The Axium Healthcare Trainee Seminar Series provides an important platform for research scientists to hone and drive this innovation. We are proud to help support SBP’s training and development program and the value it brings to the future of healthcare.”
Emily Smith, Ph.D., President of the SBP Science Network added, “The seminar series is important for career development and fosters a team environment. It is a venue for scientists to showcase what you work hard on day in and day out and receive feedback from experts in the field.”
The Axium Healthcare Trainee Seminar Series is taking place in Orlando, Florida, and will continue through June 1, 2017.
