And it wouldn’t be an 80’s party without a throwback movie. Fans can vote now for their favorite movie from 1986 at CinemaCafe.com, and the winner will show for free May 16th through May 19th at the Pembroke location. On Tuesday, May 17th, Pembroke will host a celebration with a bounce house for the kids to enjoy (weather permitting) and tons of giveaways throughout the day. Thirty years in business doesn’t just happen. In May of 1986, John and Debbie Walker, along with then partners Richard, Edward, and Jeffrey Kramer, brought the concept of dinner at a movie to Virginia Beach in the form of Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse. It was a small twin-plex theater in the Pembroke Meadows Shopping Center that served food and beer while guests watch a movie – an innovative concept then, which continues to delight guests today. Die-hard fans still fondly refer to the establishment as “the Drafthouse”.
By the 1990s, as operations shifted to focus on a more family-oriented restaurant atmosphere, the “Drafthouse” was dropped from the name and the theater was re-Christened as Cinema Cafe. In coordination with that change in focus came a firmer commitment to customer satisfaction and community support, both of which have contributed to the positive brand image of Cinema Cafe. Since then, the Walkers, the Kramers, and Mike Ogden have grown the local chain to 5 locations in total between Virginia Beach, Hampton, and Chesapeake, including the brand new location at Edinburgh Commons in Chesapeake which opened this past December. The 40,000 square foot, 1100-seat, 9-plex at Edinburgh is already impressing returning and new Cinema Cafe customers alike.
Cinema Cafe is a values-based business with fun and affordable entertainment as two of their primary values. They have been recognized year after year with awards such as “Best Movie Theater” and “Best Family Entertainment” because of their focus on those values. The family-run company is enthusiastic about providing a unique and memorable experience for the whole family without breaking the bank, and they hope to continue providing extraordinary entertainment and service for the next 30 years and beyond.
