Audiology Island Announces May the Very Time to Prevent Your Kids' Hearing Loss
Staten Island, New York (PRWEB) May 06, 2016 -- Speech, hearing, and language disorders affect an estimated 40 million Americans, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Since 1927, ASHA has celebrated Better Hearing and Speech Month each May to raise public awareness of these disorders. This year’s theme is Communication Takes Care.
“We live in an era full of technology. Kids spend hours everyday on devices and often miss out on typical verbal exchanges like talking and reading. Carving out time each day to work on speaking, reading, and listening is critical for a child’s development and may allow a parent to catch potential hearing or speech struggles sooner rather than later,” says Stella Fulman, AuD, CCC-A, Doctor of Audiology.
Since the use of earbuds has spiked over the last decade, so has the spike in hearing loss in young people. “It’s important to make sure the volume level is below 50 percent and take listening breaks often. This type of hearing loss is easily prevented. What people don’t understand is even mild hearing loss can negatively impact a child’s life. It can make it harder for them to achieve academic success and can lead to feelings of social isolation,” says Dr. Fulman.
As soon as a hearing or speech problem is suspected it’s important to get help from an audiologist immediately. “Hearing issues do not get better over time and children typically don’t outgrow a communication disorder. Early detection leads to early intervention. The earlier the patient is treated the better the results,”explains, Dr. Fulman.
