FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Long Now Foundation announced today that it is making its archive of Seminars About Long-term Thinking (SALT) available on its website and on the new Apple apps allowing people to stream the SALT Seminars on Apple TV and iOS devices. The apps will feature videos of The Long Now Foundation’s latest Seminars, including those by author and Nobel prize winner Daniel Kahneman; author Neil Gaiman; English composer and record producer Brian Eno; oceanographer Sylvia Earle; biotechnologist, biochemist and geneticist, Craig Venter; WIRED’s founding executive editor Kevin Kelly;  author and MacArthur Fellow Elaine Pagels; Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh; biologist Edward O. The Long Now Foundation Seminars, hosted by Stewart Brand, are available as audio and video at Longnow.org/seminars or as a free app download at the iTunes store under ‘Long Now Seminars’. The iOS app will initially launch with 50 Seminars. In addition, new Seminars will be added monthly as part of the Foundation’s ongoing series about long-term thinking. Here’s a short video about the Apple TV and iOS  launch.

The Seminars are free to watch, and are made available through the generous donations of the members of The Long Now Foundation and their sponsors, including William R. Hearst III, Kim Polese, Shel Kaphan, Garrett Gruener, and the Susie Tompkins Buell Fund, among many others.

Membership begins at $96 per year, and includes free tickets to the monthly Seminars held at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco, as well as a quarterly newsletter, and free and discounted tickets to partner events.  The media has been created in association with FORA.tv, a San Francisco-based video production and marketing company.

THE LONG NOW FOUNDATION

The Long Now Foundation was founded in 01996 to foster long-term thinking and responsibility. Recognizing that many problems of global magnitude can be traced back to a lack of long-term perspective, The Foundation offers a counterpoint to today’s pervasive “faster and cheaper” mindset through a variety of creative programs that bring arts and culture into dialogue with science and technology.

The Long Now Foundation hosts monthly Seminars about Long-term Thinking, in addition to frequent talks at The Interval in San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture with renowned scientists and cultural leaders of the day.  Talks focus on the theme of “slower and better” as an effective guide to help generate ideas and insights that will benefit society within the framework of the next 10,000 years.

The Foundation also sponsors ambitious forward-thinking initiatives, including building a 10,000-year Clock; hosts long-term, accountable-bets about the future (including a $1 million bet from Warren Buffett); spearheads the Rosetta Project, a digital library of all the world’s existing languages; and created the Revive and Restore project, a program that is working to preserve endangered species.
