New York, New York (PRWEB) May 13, 2016
Kikkerland Design will feature the student product submissions from the 8th Design Challenge in partnership with Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and The Container Store at the 2016 International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York from May 14-17. Twenty student submissions will be on display at Kikkerland’s innovative booth, specifically highlighting the winning products from the three core design categories: The Connected Home, Healthy Food and The “Celebrity Effect”. The overall winning product design, the Cable Loft by student Jieying Ni, will be produced and sold in The Container Store’s locations nationwide in mid-May.
Students of RISD assistant professor Matthew Bird’s Industrial Design class were encouraged to rethink the organized home with this year’s Design Challenge and received guidance and insight from The Container Store and Kikkerland during the design and creation process.
"Juniors in my fall ID studio conducted what I refer to as 'research-meaningful' investigations, examining the familiar domestic disarray of friends and family members as a means of designing proposed solutions that are at times playful, at others elegantly functional," explained Bird. "This design challenge with Kikkerland and The Container Store gave students an opportunity to work with industry professionals and learn how to design for a client, improve their design work with feedback from a wide range of experienced voices, and present their work in a public fashion. It's been a great experience for everyone involved."
Upon completion of the products in December 2015, customers of The Container Store and Kikkerland were encouraged to vote for their favorite design to be awarded as the People’s Choice. Of the twenty designs, three winners were chosen amongst the three design categories, followed by the overall winning product, the Cable Loft, as chosen by The Container Store.
The Cable Loft is a slim, durable organizer that rests neatly from a table or desk edge to hold a power strip and multiple cords or charging cables. The organizer features multiple grooves along the side and top that allow excess cords to be coiled neatly while keeping cords and outlets within easy reach. The Cable Loft will be available exclusively at The Container Store’s locations nationwide beginning May 15th and will be sold for $14.99.
“While we live in a ‘wireless’ world, cord clutter remains one of our customers’ most common struggles in their work, home office or dorm spaces,” said Sharon Tindell, Chief Merchandising Officer, The Container Store. We are always looking for new innovative solutions that help our customers streamline their cord storage to make them less obtrusive while still easily accessible. We feel the Cable Loft is a superb solution that will help our customers simplify and streamline their cord storage and we look forward to introducing it in our stores this May.”
