Former Professional Lacrosse Players Launch New Summer Lacrosse Camps in Reno, Truckee, Tahoe
Truckee, Calif. (PRWEB) May 19, 2016 -- Tahoe Lacrosse Company has joined forces with Tahoe Summer Camps to launch three boys and girls lacrosse camps this summer.
Founded by former Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and National Lacrosse League (NLL) player and Tahoe local Taylor Simmers, the camps offer a unique lacrosse experience where players can learn from the best and enjoy every day on the field without leaving the region.
Taylor Simmers, executive director of Tahoe Lacrosse Company, was a recruited athlete at Princeton University, where he won two National Championships in lacrosse and earned NCAA All-American, NCAA Scholar All-American and Ivy-League honors. Simmers played lacrosse professionally for the Philadelphia Wings in the NLL and the San Francisco Dragons in the MLL, served as an Asst. Coach at Princeton University with Bill Tierney and David Metzbower, and has directed numerous lacrosse camps and programs throughout the West.
Tahoe Summer Camps director Eric Martin, also a Tahoe local, was a member of the US Men’s National Team that won gold in England in 2010 and serves as an integral team member of Tahoe Lacrosse Company. A professional lacrosse player for 10 year retiring after the 2014 summer. He played for 8 seasons with the Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League, winning a World Championship in 2010. In Major League Lacrosse Martin played defense for Rochester, San Francisco, Denver and Boston, earning multiple All Pro and All Star honors. In college, Martin was twice First Team All-American, twice Defenseman of the Year, and Division III Player of the Year at Salisbury University. Eric was inducted in the Salisbury University Hall of Fame in 2014.
The lacrosse camps’ on-site directors include Jonny Poe, Head Coach of North Tahoe High School, and Jess Spadafora Boone. Former head coach of Bucknell University and founder of an elite travel lacrosse program for girls, Boone coached college lacrosse for more than ten years at Manhattan College, Randolph-Macon College and Bucknell University. As a player at the University of Albany, Boone became the first person in the program's history to break the 100-point mark, and she currently holds Albany’s records for goals and points in both a season and career. She currently resides in Sparks, NV and is excited about helping develop the girls game in the region.
“One of our primary goals is to elevate the level of the game of lacrosse in Tahoe and Northern Nevada to national recognition over the next three to five years,” said Simmers. “Starting with youth development, we want to help girls and boys in the area enjoy every day on the field, and ultimately play competitively in high school, college and beyond. We also want to bring in amazing lacrosse talent and connect the area’s best players with our network of coaches and teams across the country.”
Tahoe Lacrosse Company’s unique educational approach develops each player’s mind, body and spirit for a love of the game. The camps focus on whole player development to hone skills, improve players’ lacrosse IQ, cultivate character values, and enhance core strength, speed and agility. Personalized instruction includes video analysis for rapid skill development, evaluation of each player’s progress and the setting of SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely) goals for the future.
“The game of lacrosse is a perfect fit for our mountain lifestyle,” continued Simmers. “The ‘go for it’ mentality, skill and athleticism of skiing and snowboarding are perfect matches for the game of lacrosse, as many of our local athletes have already figured out. This is just one of the reasons why the game is taking off up here at elevation.”
Tahoe Lacrosse Company has put together an all-star coaching line up of the area’s best girls and boys coaches, who are also some of the best in the nation, as well as expert guest coaches from top teams and organizations. Coaches have played in Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League, earned NCAA Lacrosse All-America honors, won NCAA Championships and World Championships and coached at the high school varsity and collegiate levels.
“We are excited to bring our expertise, resources and enjoyment of the game to players in the region,” said Simmers. “Our core team is comprised of Tahoe locals, who help players the region elevate their game year-round. We know the sport is going to continue to thrive here, as it has with the help and guidance of people like Carl Steiner, Paul Cowie, Curt Wegener, Pete Halberstadt, Jim Johnson, Bud Haley and Jackie Allen.”
Tahoe Summer Camps and Tahoe Lacrosse Company are proud to partner with Tahoe Expedition Academy, Lorne Smith Lacrosse Camps, FireThreads, True Lacrosse, The Truckee Tribe Lacrosse Club, North Tahoe Lacrosse Club and BodyPOW to elevate the game of lacrosse in the region and create the next lacrosse mecca in the West here in Tahoe, Truckee and Northern Nevada.
