The Radiosurgery Society® Presents SRS BEST Awards to Outstanding Residents for their Contributions to Radiosurgery Research
San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) May 24, 2016 -- The Radiosurgery Society (RSS), a non-profit medical society dedicated to advancing the science and clinical practice of radiosurgery, is recognizing five medical residents and students for their outstanding contributions to research in the fields of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The awards will be presented at the 2016 SRS/SBRT Scientific Meeting taking place June 16-18, 2016, in Orlando, Florida.
The SRS BEST Awards were designed to promote research in the field of SRS/SBRT and provide young investigators the opportunity to present their research and interact with other radiosurgery professionals at the RSS 2016 SRS/SBRT Scientific Meeting. This year’s award recipients were selected based on scientific merit of their abstracts and will receive the awards to assist with their travel expenses to attend the meeting.

Many of the resident submissions received scores from our abstract review committee on par with those of veteran researchers,“ commented Evan Thomas, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Resident, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and RSS Resident Program Chair. “The RSS does a fantastic job facilitating the showcasing of research for those early in their careers, and we are all excited to hear the award-winners’ presentations.”

The field of SRS/SBRT is continually evolving and these resident/students are on the cutting edge of SRS/SBRT research for cancer patients. Their projects are extremely diversified and include such topics as identifying a new SBRT device to treat breast cancer, optimizing therapies to treat pancreatic cancer, assessing SRS to treat brain metastases and spinal tumors, and measuring quality-of-life outcomes of head and neck cancer patients treated with SBRT. 2016 SRS BEST Award Recipients:
Grand Prize: James W. Snider, III, M.D., University of Maryland Medical Center, MD for his abstract titled “Preoperative Partial Breast Irradiation with a Novel Breast-Specific Stereotactic Radiotherapy (BSRT) Device: Projected Improvements in Cosmetic Outcomes over Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)”.
First Prize: Konstantin Kovtun, M.D., Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA for his abstract titled “Neoadjuvant Therapy for Borderline Resectable and Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer”.
Honorable Mention: Emile Gogineni, D.O., Northwell Health, NY for his abstract titled “Long-term survivorship following stereotactic radiosurgery alone for brain metastases: risk of intracranial failure and implications for surveillance and counselling”.
Honorable Mention: Kevin Kelley, M.D., Ph.D., Northwell Health, NY for his abstract titled “Palliative Management of Metastatic Spinal tumors with Spine Radiosurgery”.
Honorable Mention: Isabella Zhang, M.D., Northwell Health, NY for her abstract titled “Tumor control and quality of life following organ-sparing SBRT for reirradiation of head-and-neck cancer”.
