A shocking poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that two-thirds of Americans could not swing a $1,000 expense if need be. Jim Hitt of American IRA explains how those struggling to make ends meet can reverse their fortunes and start planning for retirement with a Self-Directed IRA.

Americans struggling financially should look to save a portion of what they earn—however small—and begin a program of eliminating debt and using tax-advantaged accounts to maximize their retirement investments.

When recent research conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research demonstrated that some 2/3rds of Americans couldn’t handle an expense of $1,000, it became apparent that the state of the economy is not what many people thought it was.

“People are struggling hard to make ends-meet,” said James Hitt, CEO of American IRA, a Self-Directed IRA administration firm based in North Carolina. “It’s not just people living paycheck to paycheck, either. Even those with higher incomes have trouble finding the flexibility to swing sudden expenses. Savings and retirement investment are, unfortunately, not as popular as they could be in a better economy.”

Without savings, Jim Hitt pointed out, many people are vulnerable to the unpredictable nature of their circumstances. Extensive car repairs could force many to find other ways to get to work. Unexpected medical costs can send a budget tumbling.

“It’s not just that people don’t have money,” noted Jim Hitt. “It’s that people are spending so much on basic items like housing, food, and insurance, that even if they make a good wage, there’s no money left over at the end of the month for necessary items like retirement investment.”

In a recent blog post at AmericanIRA.com, Jim Hitt noted that Americans struggling financially should look to save a portion of what they earn—however small—and begin a program of eliminating debt and using tax-advantaged accounts to maximize their retirement investments.

“With a Self-Directed IRA, people are free to get hold of their own finances again,” noted Jim Hitt. “And when every penny counts, having that form of control can mean the difference between debt and savings.”
