Milton Hershey School Teachers Selected for Torch of Global Enlightenment Award
HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) May 23, 2016 -- Three Milton Hershey School high school teachers have been selected as recipients of the 2016 Torch of Global Enlightenment award from the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg. Ninth-grade American history teachers Jamie Kinsley, Kelly O’Brien and Tom Sites are the first educators to receive the award.
“These three ninth-grade teachers have done a tremendous job making history relevant to the youth of today,” said Tanya Barton, senior director of Graduate Programs for Success at Milton Hershey School. “One day our youth will have to make decisions that not only impact themselves, but our country and the rest of the world. This curriculum will better prepare them to understand and support forward progress in our country and the rest of the world.”
The Torch of Global Enlightenment award honors the achievements of individuals, organizations and educators who exemplify the ideals of inclusiveness, respect for diversity, multiculturalism and interfaith dialogue.
“Our team worked really hard to restructure this year’s curriculum to broaden American history and see its global impact,” said Sites. “We followed a new initiative called the C3 Framework, which stands for college, career and civic life. It’s a more progressive way to teach American history.”
Milton Hershey School creates opportunities to cultivate strength of character by elevating global awareness and understanding among students. The goal is to empower students with worldly experiences to gain a better understanding of different cultures.
Other 2016 recipients of the Torch award include Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortes; Ho-Thanh Nguyen president of the Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Network (PAIRWN); Yolanda Perez co-founder of Latino Hispanic Professional Organization; Dr. Wayne Selcher, retired Elizabethtown College professor; and Ann Van Dyke, retired member of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
