James Hitt offers an alternative viewpoint: that healthy rental property prices can actually be a very good thing for those with a Self-Directed IRA that want to invest in real estate.

After a recent slideshow at pointed out the most expensive rental properties in each state, it’s popular for many to see a growing chasm between the rich and the poor in the country. But American IRA CEO Jim Hitt offers an alternative viewpoint: that healthy rental property prices can actually be a very good thing for those with a Self-Directed IRA that want to invest in real estate.

“I see a lot of people who are able to use their Self-Directed IRA for real estate,” said Jim Hitt. “And they really enjoy the fact that they don’t have to manage these properties hands-on in order to generate an income. For anyone looking to retire with a healthy income, purchasing rental property can be one of the best decisions they’ve ever made.”

The slideshow at browsed through all 50 states to find some of the most expensive rental properties available—selections included a $40,000-per-month rental property in Arizona and a five-bedroom property in Malibu that cost millions of dollars per year to rent out. On the surface, it’s tempting to see these rental property prices at outlandish, but sometimes, renting can work out for both owner and tenant.

“When owning is expensive, people without a lot of capital still need a place to stay,” said Jim Hitt. “And owners need to find viable options for their retirement money. In many cases, these arrangements are win-win, with a side bonus of generating work for property managers that are able to ease the load of property owners.”

Although rules for Self-Directed IRA investments in real estate do have some limits—for example, owners cannot live in an investment property—many future retirees find that these properties can represent some of the most reliable income possible.
