Employee Assistance expert Bert Alicea to share how employers can protect employees and organizations

Domestic violence impacts everyone, from the victims to the people with whom they live and work, and the emotional and financial costs can be significant.

Health Advocate, the nation’s leading healthcare advocacy and assistance company and a subsidiary of West Corporation, today announced that Bert Alicea, M.A., CEAP, Executive Vice President of EAP+Work/Life Services at Health Advocate, will present a session during the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) 2016 Annual Conference and Exposition, to be held June 19-22, 2016, in Washington, DC.

Alicea, a Licensed Psychologist with over 27 years of experience in the EAP (Employee Assistance Program) field, will discuss the critical issue of “Domestic Violence: The Impact on the Workplace,” on Wednesday, June 22 at 11:30 AM ET.

Domestic violence continues to be headline news in the U.S. Among employed adults in the U.S., one in five will be abused by an intimate partner in his or her lifetime, yet 70 percent of companies do not have a plan or policy in place to address this issue. While the safety and security of employees is foremost, this issue also contributes to reduced productivity; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the annual cost of lost productivity due to domestic violence is almost $1.8 billion.

“Domestic violence impacts everyone, from the victims to the people with whom they live and work,” said Alicea, “and the emotional and financial costs can be significant.”

Alicea will share an overview of this issue as well as offer important information about prevention and intervention strategies that can help session participants identify signs of domestic violence and safeguard their organization's workers, productivity and bottom line. Attendees will also learn how to develop customized intervention programs that can help reduce the toll of domestic violence in their organization.

The SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition is the largest conference for human resources professionals, drawing thousands of participants each year to learn more about the latest developments and strategies from renowned industry experts.
