How might outside-the-box thinkers use Self-Directed IRAs to enhance their portfolio? Sean McKay, Executive Vice President of American IRA, weighs in and explains the secret to “outside-the-box” success during a recent interview with Small Business Talks.

Sean McKay, Senior Vice President

I would honestly be involved with American IRA even if I was not compensated, just simply for the techniques and relationships that I have been gained from the experience.

Answering questions for Small Business Talks, American IRA Executive Vice President Sean McKay expressed some unusual notions when it comes to retirement planning and Self-Directed IRA investing.

Sean McKay starts out telling Small Business Talks about dual role a.k.a. wearing “two hats”—one the Senior Vice President of American IRA and the other running Sean's own real estate investment company with wife, Heather McKay made it clear that Sean practices what American IRA preaches: finding different asset types using tax-protected accounts in order to maximize diversification and value for retirement.

Describing American IRA’s client-first approach to investing, McKay noted: “We do not advise clients as to whether a particular asset is appropriate for their portfolio, however the examples that we use in our educational platforms are outstanding.”

It’s not often that people hear an executive vice president for an investment-based company speak the way Sean McKay does. In fact, Sean McKay is even wary about giving others retirement advice: “Frankly, I do not believe that I am worthy of giving others advice as I am first and foremost a student of business but I have appreciated those that have shared with me how careful we must be with leverage/debt.”

Sean McKay gets as much out of the teaching tools available at American IRA as clients do—perhaps even more. “I would honestly be involved with American IRA even if I was not compensated, just simply for the techniques and relationships that I have been gained from the experience,” said Sean McKay.

Sean McKay praised the outside-the-box thinking of CEO James Hitt and stressed that in any economic environment, it’s important to get started with investing even if just to learn, one step at a time.
