Identity fraud is a multi-billion-dollar industry. In an age of technology-driven information sharing, identity fraud has emerged as an epidemic.

Here’s the kicker: government officials know what is going on and how to stop it.

In “WTF? Where’s the Fraud” by Larry Benson and Andy Bucholz, the authors reveal the devastating cost fraud has on our country and shed light on the growing insecurity of the government’s benefits administration and the impact on US healthcare.

“The IRS knows that illegal immigrants are using stolen Social Security numbers on their tax forms,” Benson said. “They are just willing to turn a blind eye, when it’s convenient, to collect on their income. But it’s the American people who are paying the price.”

Larry Benson and Andy Bucholz are researchers and developers of solutions for identity theft and fraud at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. Benson is also the creator and head author of the LexisNexis website, “Fraud of the Day” (http://www.fraudoftheday.com).

“We have learned that the US government knowingly, continuously processes fraudulent tax returns, with falsified W-2 information, as if they were routine tax returns,” Benson said. “The IRS ignores notifications from the Social Security Administration that a name does not match a Social Security number, and responds with, ‘That’s not really our job.’”

Forwarded by Frank Abagnale, the subject of the book, movie and Broadway musical, “Catch Me if You Can,” Benson and Bucholz’s book is a wake-up call to government officials to stop passing the buck and a call-to-action for the general public to put pressure on leaders to stop losing taxpayer money.
