The Future Business Leaders of America (FLBA) National Awards Program recognizes and rewards excellence in business and career-related areas. At the State Leadership Conferences, students compete in events that test their business knowledge and skills.
As a member of FBLA, New Jersey high school junior Dan Mikrut had to choose a company he felt passionate about when preparing his sales presentation for the state competition. After researching various companies, he discovered Thompson Tee’s patented sweat proof shirts, which solved a problem that hit close to home.
“I thought of a problem many individuals face daily, but also one that affected me personally after a sweet 16 party,” Dan said. “After Googling and seeing that a product like Thompson Tee exists, I decided to contact Mr. Thompson for help with my presentation.”
The Road to FBLA Finals
As part of the competition guidelines, Dan had to supply necessary materials and Thompson Tee merchandise for the demonstration. To help prepare for his 7-minute pitch, Dan reached out to Thompson Tee co-founder Billy Thompson for help.
After hearing Dan’s story, Billy felt compelled to help. He sent Dan a display model shirt for the presentation with special packaging, white and gray sweat shield tees, Thompson Tee-branded hats and style tips for wearing the sweat proof shirts.
At the state competition, students test their sales competency, business knowledge and job skills through a 7-minute presentation with the goal of selling a product to the judges. They’re graded on opening statements, product presentation, knowledge of product features, their ability to create interest for the product and closing remarks. Top state winners are eligible to compete for national awards at the National Leadership Conference in late June.
On February 18 and 19, Dan headed to Atlantic City, New Jersey, to compete against students from high schools across the state. In the New Jersey sales presentation category, Dan received first place, securing his spot in the national competition in late June.
The next stop is nationals held in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 29 to July 3 — where Dan will go on to compete for $50,000 in scholarships and prize money.
