Two Enterprising High School Students Recruit Portland and Hollywood Community to Help Launch New Summer Arts Camp Dedicated to an Often Overlooked Community—Foster Kids

Two high school students will spend their summer vacation hoping to inspire the next generation of art lovers. Discover Theatre Camp will raise its curtain for the first time in August. “We want to create a safe learning environment for kids who often don’t have the chance to experience the arts,” states Jordyn Mayer, co-creative director.

“Most activities for foster care children focus on sports. Our camp is unique because we’re addressing two overlooked areas; foster children and the arts,” adds Gracie Jacobson, co-creative director, who also frequently performs in productions for Northwest Children’s Theatre and Oregon Children’s Theatre.

Jordyn recruited her uncle—noted set designer Michael Mayer—to give students hands-on design experience. Mayer served as production designer for "Judging Amy," "Star Trek: Voyager," "LA Law," and "Bones." Other advisors include voice and music coaches and education leaders.

About Discover Theatre
Discover Theatre is a non-profit organization that provides a safe and fun learning environment for children who otherwise may not have the opportunity to learn about the arts. The summer drama camp is open to foster care children in the first through eighth grades. Camp participants will learn a song, a choreographed dance and a scene they will showcase at the end of the week for their families/friends. Students also have the chance to create their own sets and costumes as well as learn improvisation games and acting and singing techniques. Camp volunteers include High School juniors and seniors with theater experience along with adults working in the arts as well as education.
