“Stinging creatures, such as fire ants and bees, are readily amongst us and, while their intention is not to do harm to us, humans often interrupt their regimens, resulting in stings,” says climatologist Laurence S. Kalkstein, Ph.D..

Nothing will stop a fun summer day outdoors in its tracks like a painful sting you aren’t prepared to deal with. “Stinging creatures, such as fire ants and bees, are readily amongst us and, while their intention is not to do harm to us, humans often interrupt their regimens, resulting in stings,” says climatologist Laurence S. Kalkstein, Ph.D. and professor in the Division of Environment and Public Health at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. “There are more than 5 million fire ant stings in the Southern tier of the United States annually."

This doesn’t mean going outdoors needs to be avoided. “In fact, in most cases, being aware of your surroundings can lessen your chances of being stung,” says Kalkstein. He advises keeping an eye on areas where bee nests are forming or fire ant mounds are more prevalent, as well as being prepared with first aid supplies to deal with stings and bites should they arise. He also offers the following tips:

•Bees – Bees are a real “buzzkill” for outdoor summer activities, yet they are an important part of our ecosystem. Instead of reaching for insecticide to kill the bees, take steps to keep your distance. Keep food containers tightly closed so bees are not attracted. If you do get stung, first remove the stinger using the edge of a credit card or similar (swipe vs. squeeze/pull out the stinger to avoid pumping more venom into the skin), then numb the resulting pain and itch with Sting-Kill® (available in convenient swabs or wipes), the number-one choice of pharmacists for bee stings and insect bites.

•Fire Ants – While a bee may strike once, a typical encounter with fire ants rarely stops at just one sting. Each mound has thousands of small ants ready to defend their territory, so you can be stung by dozens or more ants at a time that quickly crawl over a bare foot, up a pant leg, or on an arm. To help combat the pain and itch from many stings, try new Fire Out®, a roll-on product that easily spreads its dual action maximum strength benzocaine and menthol formula across the many stings in a few, easy swipes.

•Sting Ray – Sting rays often bury themselves in the sand. To check for them – “do the shuffle!” Shuffle your feet in shallow water or toss stones to scare them away. If you are stung, remove the barb and keep the wound in the salt water to help clean it. Apply pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding and flush out the venom. Hot water can lessen the pain and destroy the venom, but the pain should last no longer than 90 minutes.

•Jelly Fish – Contrary to popular belief, all jellyfish sting, even the clear ones! When swimming or snorkeling, be sure to look out for jellyfish that may be on the surface of the water. If you are stung, remove any pieces of jellyfish tentacle still in your skin and rinse thoroughly with seawater (not tap water). Toss Sting-Kill in your beach bag for fast itch and pain relief from its dual action formula.

“It’s important to note that dangerous allergic reactions to stings from various creatures can occur at any time and it is important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest tightness, shortness of breath or extreme swelling, particularly on the face, lips or throat,” expresses Kalkstein.
