Additional master's degrees will involve studying the Old Testament and giving pastoral care leaders tools to help people facing emotional or psychological challenges.

The Graduate School of Theology at Freed-Hardeman University plans to offer two additional master’s degrees in Bible this fall. The Master of Arts in Old Testament program will be directed by Dr. Justin Rogers and the Master of Arts in pastoral care and counseling will by directed by Dr. Ryan Fraser.

The M.A. in Old Testament is a fully online 48-hour program that includes a six-hour thesis. However, students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in Bible may request advanced standing for up to 12 hours. The program provides the linguistic, historical, exegetical, and hermeneutical tools necessary to understand the Old Testament in its original context. It balances rigorous academic research and writing with practical application to Christian faith.

The M.A. in pastoral care and counseling is also a 48-hour program that includes a six-hour internship. Courses will provide spiritual and practical tools for ministers as they provide care and counseling for those facing emotional or psychological challenges. The program balances grounded theoretical research with practical applications to real situations. With the exception of one clinical that will be offered as a short course, the degree will be available online.

Both programs are expected to be approved by the FHU Board of Trustees at their next meeting. Currently, the Graduate School of Theology at FHU offers three degrees: Master of Arts in Ministry, Master of Arts in New Testament and the Master of Divinity.
