The Antlers at Vail hotel board of directors has selected Assistant GM Magdalena King to succeed Rob LeVine as general manager on October 1, 2016, when LeVine retires after 38 years at the Vail, Colorado, condominium hotel, 29 of them as its GM. King’s strongly “people first” management style has been an inspiration since she joined the hotel staff 10 years ago, LeVine says. In 2014 she was named Hospitality Professional of the Year at the Vail Valley Partnership Success Awards, in part for setting a goal to help all of her housekeeping staff get GEDs, including forming a Spanish-language book club to boost literacy.

“When Magdalena Isabel Cedeño Cabrera King told me in 2007 that she’d give me five years if I hired her, little did I know that she would turn out to have the unique combination of people skills, financial acumen and overall business sense that you find once in a blue moon,” writes LeVine in a personal blog post on the Antlers website about the upcoming transition.
In making the decision, the Antlers board considered a number of candidates whose collective experience included the general manager positions of seven different Vail properties, then narrowed the field to three, including King. “All three were super qualified, but in the end the board decided that none were more so than Magda, and that she had earned the position with her great work over the past 10 years here,” says LeVine. “I could not be happier and am excited for the future of the Antlers.”
“As assistant GM it has been my duty to oversee the entire operation of the hotel; however, it’s my personal approach not to focus on the task but on the person,” says King, who was promoted to the assistant position in 2012. “I am sure that if our employees are satisfied, good professional results will follow.”
Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, King is also conscious of her role as a Latina businesswoman. “I am a minority in our hospitality professional world,” she says. “I would love to set an example for women who come to this country thinking that they can only do housekeeping or trade jobs.”
In addition to her GED program for housekeeping staff, King has been instrumental in helping Antlers at Vail receive the Platinum ranking from the Vail Valley Partnership, managing the innumerable aspects of the ongoing design and construction upgrades to the hotel’s condominiums to meet the exacting standards for Vail’s highest-level rating for lodging.
