Bioclinica®, a specialty clinical trials technology and services provider, today announced Parallel 6 has become the newest member of its eHealth App xChange™, an alliance channel within the eHealth Solutions business segment to advance technology innovation across life sciences and healthcare. Under the partnership, Parallel 6’s Clinical Reach™ becomes available as a patient-centric mobile clinical trial platform integrated with the Bioclinica eHealth Cloud™.

“This is an exciting development for sponsors and CROs seeking an increased pool of potential patients, as well as for patients wishing to take part in a clinical trial but deterred by the inconvenience and time commitment,” said Anne Zielinski, Vice President of Technology Partnerships, Bioclinica eHealth Solutions. About half of potential trial participants live more than an hour from an investigator site, according to one study. Travel time coupled with onsite visit time can add up, proving too taxing for some. “The patient-centric Clinical Reach clinical trial platform integrated with Bioclinica’s eHealth Cloud is a technology-enabled solution that brings the trial to the patient.” This allows remote or reduced site trials, which can be especially beneficial to patients who are too sick or live too far away from a site and those with limited transportation options. “Increasing opportunities for trial participation gives patients greater access to therapies not yet commercially available that may benefit them and ultimately others.”

Making Clinical Reach a part of Bioclinica’s comprehensive eHealth Solutions platform offerings can also dramatically improve patient satisfaction with the overall trial experience. In a remote or reduced visit study, trial activities are fully integrated as part of the patient’s daily life, with consumer-type applications used for reporting health related information in combination with digital and mobile methods for personalized patient-investigator interaction. Daily interaction may include reminders on a mobile phone carried throughout the day, as well as alerts and other notifications, such as medication reminders. Ongoing encouragement through messaging and badges has shown to promote better overall patient engagement. “More frequent patient contact, as well as patient-direct data, translates into opportunities for improved safety as issues can be recognized and addressed immediately based on this real-time data,” Zielinski explained.

For sponsors and CROs, increasing the potential pool of patients via remote patient participation can thwart the problem of insufficient data, as well as slow enrollment -the most common cause of trial failure and an expensive problem to remediate. The integrated eHealth, Clinical Reach solution supports remote enrollment; informed consent; patient-direct data capture including diaries and questionnaires; caregiver participation; patient engagement; and management of patient activities. Mobile device data and patient learning videos are also part of the platform’s extensive capabilities.

Besides patient-entered data, data generated by mobile devices, such as scales, blood pressure and glucose monitoring and other devices, flows into Clinical Reach and from there into the Bioclinica eHealth Cloud. “As an end-to-end solution, the integration even provides for reimbursement or payment based on trial activities, so that sites and patients can be promptly paid,” Zielinski said. The regulatory-compliant Clinical Reach platform has been used in both registration and late phase trials. “We welcome discussions with sponsors and CROs in leveraging this exciting technology to run trials with remote or reduced sites, or even no sites, for efficiency and cost benefits, as well as to create a better experience for the patient.”
