Not only are there wide variations in performance from one provider to the next but also from one datacenter to the next.

Cloud performance management leader, Krystallize Technologies, announced today the findings of its latest CloudQoS Service Capability Index (SCI) ranking the top four cloud providers in terms of service capability and cost.
In order to provide the industry’s first accurate cloud capability performance measures to help application owners effectively transition and manage cloud services, Krystallize Technologies developed the CloudQoS Service Capability Index.
“It is evident that IBM SoftLayer is working hard to deliver on their promise of high performance gear for all services in all locations,” said Clinton France, CEO of Krystallize Technologies. “Not only did they tie Amazon for first place in Linux (4 core) and captured second place in Windows (4 core) but their performance differential across East and West datacenters was only 3%.”
Krystallize Technologies utilizes their CloudQoS cloud service performance management and optimization solution to deploy and execute a common synthetic workload to assess, collect, measure and characterize the cloud provider ability to deliver, i.e. capability to perform. CloudQoS – CSP Service Capability Index is run against; Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM SoftLayer and Microsoft AZURE. Each month Krystallize executes the Service Capability Index (SCI) and generates a score (SCImark) for each provider based on more than 120 cloud systems tested across Linux and Windows systems sampled across the providers multiple datacenters.
“Our goal with the CloudQoS™ SCImark is to provide a service baseline for which daily, weekly and monthly CloudQoS service measure can be compared,” said France. “While the SCImark is the industry’s first performance benchmark that takes into account cloud service capability and costs, for companies that are migrating to the cloud, they really need for us to profile their exact application workloads to ensure the best cloud price and performance.”
CloudQoS SCImark Rankings for May 2016:
Linux 4 Core Linux 2 Core Windows 4 Core Windows 2 Core
SoftLayer (1st place) AWS (1st place) AZURE (1st place) SoftLayer (1st place)
AWS (1st place) SoftLayer (2nd place) SoftLayer (2nd place) AZURE (2nd place)
AZURE (3rd place) AZURE (3rd place) AWS (3rd place) AWS (3rd place)
Google (4th place) Google (4th place) Google (4th place) Google (4th place)
Not only are there wide variations in performance from one provider to the next but also from one datacenter to the next. The greatest performance differential in the same provider’s datacenters was AWS with 18% average performance difference between East and West datacenters.
Immense Variances in Price and Performance Make for Difficult Purchase Decisions
Buyers of cloud services are not only faced with price differentials of nearly 70% but also performance variations of up to 164%. The lack of visibility into what you actually are getting from a 2 Core or 4 Core instances, m2 v. m3, D2 v. Dv2 make it very difficult to make an accurate buying decision.
“The lack of visibility and transparency to really compare apples to apples makes it impossible for application delivery teams and devops leadership to identify the ‘best fit, best cost’ cloud services for their exact workloads,” said France. “In no way, shape or form are all 4 core offerings created equal. The lack of measurement inevitably leads to over-buying and provisioning of services which greatly limits the planned cost savings of moving to the cloud.”
