What if a coffee sommelier could give coffee drinkers personalized recommendations based on a deep understanding of their likes and dislikes? After months in development, the Crema.co team announces a recommendation engine that does just that.

The Brew Log utilizes the latest sensory science research and machine learning techniques to discover your coffee palate's fundamental attributes, and our recommendation engine then delivers personalized suggestions to you based on those characteristics.

At its heart is the Brew Log, a detailed profile of every coffee drinker’s personal palate, constructed by analyzing the coffees they have (and haven’t) liked in the past. It’s an unprecedented development in the coffee industry and just the beginning for the coffee marketplace.

Behind the technology is solid coffee theory. Earlier this year, World Coffee Research (WCR) published a groundbreaking sensory lexicon for coffee, identifying 110 distinct flavor attributes in coffee. Based on this new lexicon, the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) then developed a new and improved flavor wheel for coffee. Such precise mapping of coffee’s flavors allows Crema.co to tag each coffee listed on its marketplace with flavor notes vetted by the roaster and the Crema.co quality team.

As the coffee drinker interacts with coffees on Crema.co, and gives each one a thumbs up or down after ordering them, Crema.co tracks her interests. Once she’s ordered three bags, she unlocks her Brew Log and can see at a glance whether she likes citrus or brown sugar notes in her coffee, her desired roast level, what certifications she prefers, and where in the world she likes to source her coffee.
