Celebrates Independence Day and Six Years of Increased Independence with Fidelco Guide Dog “Legend”
(BLOOMFIELD, CT.) – Having volunteered for three tours of duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and disarming over 100 improvised explosive devices (IED), TSgt Matt Slaydon, USAF (Ret) served as the point person for an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD) team in Kirkuk, Iraq. Matt’s job was to “take the long walk” to determine the bomb threat that his unit faced and to safely disarm it. In October 2007, Matt slid his probe under a roadside bomb and it blew up two feet from his face, throwing him 30 feet from the blast site. Matt suffered a severed left arm injury that required immediate amputation, a shattered face and the loss of vision in both eyes. Matt was partnered with Fidelco Guide Dog “Legend” in 2010.
