#MakeAmericaSmartAgain Becomes Nationwide Voting and Education Movement
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 06, 2016 -- Today, Shepard and Amanda Fairey announce the #MakeAmericaSmartAgain movement to encourage voter education and registration during this election season. More than a quirky hashtag, this official call to action inspires voters to learn more about the political system, the issues affecting the country and direct communities, and local and national candidates.
Revealed on “PoliticKing with Larry King,” Shepard Fairey discussed why he and his wife believe that #MakeAmericaSmartAgain can empower individuals to use their brain and their voice to make a difference. The PoliticKing interview is now available to stream on Ora TV and Hulu.
“It’s really about understanding the dynamics of our political situation and also participating in democracy,” Shepard Fairey explains the impetus for #MakeAmericaSmartAgain to Larry King. “We have this system that everyone can be involved in, yet not nearly enough people participate. [It’s] encouraging people to educate themselves about the issues and then get out and vote,” said Fairey.
#MakeAmericaSmartAgain was created to get people to engage in deeper thought and dialogue about issues, and be less apathetic by participating in democracy. This movement is non-partisan to promote awareness and education, not to align with or disparage candidates.
“This year, millennials are in the majority for the first time,” Rock the Vote Vice President of Marketing & Creative Luis Calderin said. “We have the influence and the power, as the largest voting bloc this election, to shape the conversation among our candidates. The #MakeAmericaSmartAgain campaign encourages an open dialogue about the issues that matter most to us and why it’s important that we head to the polls in November to make our voices heard.”
According to a USA Today/Rock the Vote poll of millennials, the generation is already invested in issues that will be up for debate during the general election. For example, 81 percent of millennials agree that America should transition to clean energy, and a majority are in favor of stricter gun control regulations. Other most top issues for millennials include the economy, education and healthcare.
“This isn't just a movement to inspire self-awareness and education; we also want to urge citizens everywhere to tap into the resources that are available to all Americans. We’ve teamed up with the LA Library Foundation and Rock the Vote to give citizens the ability to raise their voice, vote and make decisions for themselves,” said Young Literati Co-Chairwoman Amanda Fairey.
Leading up to the general election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, there will be several hosted events, including an outdoor screening of cult classic “Idiocracy” with partners Eat|See|Hear in Los Angeles.
Other partner organizations for the #MakeAmericaSmartAgain in addition to Rock the Vote and Eat|See|Hear include Obey Giant, Studio Number One, Subliminal Projects, and Pop & Circumstance.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Young Literati and the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.
