Mercator Advisory Group, the leading independent research and advisory services firm exclusively focused on the payments industry, today announced the appointment of Theodore Iacobuzio to the firm’s senior management team as Managing Director of Custom Research and Consulting Services, replacing Patricia Hewitt, who will continue to contribute to the firm as a Director Emeritus and subject matter expert on a project-basis for the Consulting Services team.

Most recently before joining Mercator Advisory Group, Ted was responsible for Global Insights, MasterCard Worldwide’s interdisciplinary thought leadership organization. During his tenure there, Global Insights produced groundbreaking work in consumer acceptance of mobile payments technology, consumer attitudes regarding data privacy and security online, small merchant technology integration, global digital readiness and payments as a lever for economic inclusion. During his stint at MasterCard, Ted worked with some of the world’s largest and most vertically integrated financial services institutions, as well as with regional and community banks and credit unions.
Previously, Ted was for many years associated with TowerGroup, a financial services technology research and advisory firm. He was the first analyst at TowerGroup to cover payment cards as a discipline, and left the organization as director of its payment practice, where he was responsible for wholesale payments and network issues as well as card research. Among the first analysts to tackle EMV as a subject, he also introduced the industry to its first analysis of direct-mail information marketing and its effect on credit risk management, asset-backed securities as providing the industry’s engine for growth, and the relationship between debit and credit cards.
During his career as an analyst Ted has been much in demand as an industry speaker and presenter, and has published in a variety of publications, including The American Banker. He began his career as New York bureau chief for Lafferty Publications and as director of technology management services for Alex Sheshunoff Management Services, Austin, TX, where he gained deep knowledge of the community bank market.
