Adolfson & Peterson Construction Proudly Partners with Girl Scouts River Valleys to Host Rosie’s Girls, a Day Camp Empowering Young Women to Explore Construction Trades
Minneapolis, Minnesota (PRWEB) July 12, 2016 -- Adolfson & Peterson Construction proudly partners with Girl Scouts River Valleys to host Rosie’s Girls, a two-week day camp empowering young women to explore skilled construction trades
Adolfson & Peterson Construction was a proud partner of Minnesota’s first annual Rosie’s Girls – a two-week day camp teaching girls entering grades 6-8 to roll up their sleeves with a “we can do it!” attitude. Mirroring Rosie the Riveter, Rosie’s Girls Day Camp provides an opportunity for middle school girls to explore careers in the trades through hands-on experience learning to weld, wire, build, draft, and design.
Adolfson & Peterson Construction proudly partnered with Girl Scouts River Valleys and Dunwoody College of Technology to host the first camp of this kind. Rosie’s Girls was held June 20-July 1, 2016, running Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm. The program focused on empowering young women to do something they’ve never done before while being supported in a girl-centered environment focused around leadership, healthy body image, and teamwork.
On June 28, 2016, Rosie’s Girls held an open house providing the camp’s partners an opportunity to interact with the young ladies and observe the various activities, including building Little Free Libraries and drafting their dream bedroom. Between the two classrooms flew high energy, lots of smiles and excitement – hammers were pounding away, while pencils, rulers, scissors and glue were busy crafting. When asked about their camp experience, many of the girls enjoyed the hands on opportunities. “I’ve built things with my grandpa and mom before, but never been allowed to hammer by myself. I learned I CAN do it,” one girl mentioned. Another mentioned that she thought she’d be most interested in the electrical portion, being that her dad is an electrician, but she found she was more passionate about welding. Overall, there was a resounding “girls can do it” attitude from each of the young ladies regarding their camp experience; many even expressed they are interested in a potential career path in the construction trades. While the camp has now come to an end, it was a successful two-weeks and these young ladies feel empowered to explore careers in the trades.
