Lake Michigan Mailers, Inc. Co-Founders Fund Scholarships for Southwestern Michigan College
Kalamazoo, Michigan (PRWEB) July 14, 2016 -- Lake Michigan Mailers, Inc. announced today that co-founders Robert and Karen Rhoa have donated $7,000 for scholarships at Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) designated for students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science Criminal Justice Program. These awards will be given in the form of ten, $500 scholarships. Two $1000 awards have already been given to current SMC students. Those recipients are Stephanie Rich of Berrien Springs and Joseph Herrara of Holland.
These funds have been donated in loving memory of Robert and Karen’s son, Brian Rhoa. Three of their four sons pursued careers in law enforcement, Brian being one of them. He began his journey as a reserve officer for the St. Joseph City Police Department, and later relocated to Kalamazoo where he served in the same capacity for the Kalamazoo Township Police Department. While serving in Kalamazoo, Brian was recognized for volunteering the most hours in one year.
As Brian continued his studies at Ferris State University, he worked for Ferris State’s Department of Public Safety during special events. On summer breaks, the work did not stop. He served in the Berrien County Sherriff’s Department Marine Division, where he patrolled the county’s lakes and waterways. It was here that Brian suffered an eye injury which required intensive surgery to regain vision. However, this did not stop him from completing his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and receiving Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification. He was then sworn in as a Berrien County Road Patrol Division deputy sheriff.
Brian’s love to serve and protect never wavered; however, his degrading vision became a safety concern and he made the tough decision to resign.
“These scholarships will give deserving students the opportunity to pursue law enforcement with the same tenacity as Brian,” said Robert Rhoa. “We are excited to partner with SMC and to witness the continued success of their students,” Rhoa continued. Karen Rhoa added, “Law enforcement is a time consuming and often thankless job, and we are grateful for those who dedicate their lives to protect and serve.”
