ISO 50001, the international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS), becomes the latest standard to enter the ISO revisions process

The ISO 50001 Revision Process

Having seen the benefits gained from revisions to recent standards including ISO 14001, we now have the chance to make sure that the same benefits can be gained for EnMS.

ISO 50001, the international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS), became the latest standard to enter the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) revisions process and in June, ISO Technical Committee, ISO/TC 242, which has recently become TC 301, gathered in Stockholm, Sweden to discuss the revisions at an event hosted by the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS), the ISO member for the country.

Established to help organisations develop and establish systems to improve their energy performance including energy efficiency improvements, energy consumption reductions and cost and in turn lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, over 7000 organisations globally had already achieved certification against ISO 50001 by the end of 2014.

Following the meeting in June, the currently available information indicates that ISO 50001:2019 is likely to be published in January 2019.

LRQA EMS and Energy Technical Manager and TC 301 member, Judith Turner, shared her thoughts on the revision timeline; “Following the meeting in Stockholm, the Technical Committee are excited to be working on the ISO 50001 revisions. Having seen the benefits gained from revisions to recent standards including ISO 14001, we now have the chance to make sure that the same benefits can be gained for EnMS.”

As ISO 50001 progresses, LRQA will continue to issue updates. Through our extensive range of training and assessment services, LRQA is helping organisations worldwide to migrate and transition to the new and revised ISO standards.
