Orlando Kirton, MD, surgeon-in-chief and chair of the Department of Surgery, Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health

Dr. Kirton brings an incredible wealth of skill and knowledge to his new role at the helm of Abington’s Department of Surgery.

Abington – Jefferson Health is pleased to announce that Orlando C. Kirton, MD, has been appointed surgeon-in-chief and chair of the Department of Surgery at Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health. Kirton is a trauma surgeon with qualifications in surgical critical care. His career has focused on the care of patients who have experienced physical traumatic injury from car accidents, assaults and falls resulting in internal injuries, fractures, cuts, shocks and burns.

Kirton attended Brown University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry. Kirton completed his medical degree at Harvard University and his internship and residency at SUNY Health Center in Brooklyn, New York. He completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and Surgery of Trauma at Jackson Memorial Medical Center. In addition, he completed his Master of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee.

Between 1992 and 2001, Kirton proudly served in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps, where he ascended to the rank of Major. He is the chair of the Critical Care Committee and on the Board of Managers of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Kirton is the immediate past president of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, past president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and past president of the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association. On a national level, Kirton has been director of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, Level I Program. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery with an added qualification in Surgical Critical Care.

Kirton is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapter and abstracts in the domains of surgical critical care, trauma and surgical education. He has also been a guest lecturer at over 100 conferences and a principal investigator for more than 15 surgery clinical studies with topics including pneumonia, tissue oxygenation, mechanical ventilators, cholecystectomy, respiratory failure and organ transplants.
