Jai Rawat, CEO of ShopSocially, and Ryan Guldberg, Director of eCommerce Marketing at I See Me!, were invited to speak at IRCE 2016, the world’s largest conference for retailers. They shared insights on the topic “How to acquire User-Generated Content (UGC) and what to do with it” with hundreds of retailers at this Chicago conference in June.

Generating UGC at Scale
I See Me! noticed that every comment was positive since customers were engaged and delighted right after the purchase was completed. - Ryan Guldberg, Director of Ecommerce Marketing at I See Me!

ShopSocially, a leading SaaS based company for social, referral and loyalty marketing along with I See Me!, a leading site for personalized books and gifts for children, hosted a dynamic session at IRCE 2016. In this session Jai Rawat, CEO of ShopSocially and Ryan Guldberg, Director of Ecommerce Marketing at I See Me! demonstrated unique strategies and actionable tips about how eCommerce retailers can get their customers to do their merchandising. They shared insights on how to acquire user-generated-content (UGC) at scale and how it can be utilized intelligently to get positive reviews, referral sales and rapid conversions.

Jai and Ryan advised brands to go beyond reviews and acquire authentic and positive UGC by engaging users during their two special moments of delight in their purchase cycle i.e.

  •     Right after customers buy a product, and
  •     Right after customers receive their product(s)

Ryan showed how I See Me! encourages its customers to share their purchases with their friends immediately after they buy a product. By engaging customers at this moment of excitement, they are able to generate 1000s of endorsements. These endorsements are shared on social channels to generate referral traffic and also used on-site as real time ‘social buzz’ for improving conversion rate. I See Me! is also gamifying this strategy by offering a 20% discount coupon for next purchase.

“Engaging happy customers to generate positive content at scale is a holy grail for retailers.“ explained Ryan. “Using this strategy, I See Me! noticed that every comment was positive since customers were engaged and delighted right after the purchase was completed. These user testimonials were showcased beautifully on our product pages through a ‘social buzz’ widget.”

Ryan also revealed specific results that show the impact of this strategy:

  •     Users who interacted with the “social buzz” widget converted 4X higher than the normal conversion rate
  •     A/B testing revealed an overall increase of 20.3% increase in conversion rate and
  •     Referral traffic generated by social sharing converted at an amazing rate of 14.69%.

Ryan shared that I See Me! is using the Product Stories solution from ShopSocially to implement this flow.

Following Ryan, Jai Rawat shared the strategy for engaging users at the second point of delight – right after they received their product(s). He suggested retailers should encourage shoppers to take a picture of their products and share them. The sharing can be done on social channels using a retailer specific #hashtag or directly on the retailer’s website via an ‘upload’ button. These photos can then be aggregated and displayed on the website in a variety of ways such as an attractive photo gallery, a photo-strip on the home page or to augment stock photos on product pages. These ‘visual testimonials’ are really powerful because human brains are wired to process visuals 60,000 times faster than text. Jai also touched upon the benefits of harnessing these visual testimonials which are:

  •     Increased discovery of new products via user generated pictures
  •     Customer selfies being converted into sales
  •     Average of 21% increase in conversation rates
  •     Average of 15% increase in customer engagement.

“These new UGC strategies generates high participation, positive sentiments and deliver both on-site and off-site benefits.” said Jai “Additionally, gamifying the traditional UGC strategy of product reviews by say rewarding loyalty points, can go a long way in boosting participation as well.”
