High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is Changing Disease Treatment

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is successfully used to treat prostate cancer, uterine fibroids and now, essential tremors. SonoDepot, an exclusive sales and service provider of Alpinion products, now sells the E-Cube 9 ultrasound machine which pairs with HIFU technology.

"Our goal is to provide a flexible turn-key ultrasound image-guided HIFU system that enables scientists to expand their research and improve efficiency in developing future clinical applications," Yu-chi Chu, Director of Alpinion US.

HIFU or high intensity focused ultrasound, is a non-surgical, radiation-free, single outpatient procedure that uses focused sound waves to heat and destroy tissue.

As recent as October 2015, the FDA cleared HIFU for prostate tissue ablation. Formerly, men disagnosed with prostate cancer were often forced to choose between watchful waiting or invasive surgery. The targeted precision of focused ultrasound provides a meaningful solution. Small tumors are destroyed while the prostate gland and healthy tissue are preserved.

On July 11, 2016, the FDA approved the first focused ultrasound device to treat essential tremor in patients who have not responded to medication. The device uses magnetic resonance (MR) images taken during the procedure to deliver focused ultrasound to destroy brain tissue in a tiny area thought to be responsible for causing tremors.

While focused ultrasound is currently used to treat an array of ailments, from soft tissue tumors and bone metastasis to uterine fibroids, the future potential is vast. Last year, a team of scientists at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto opened the blood-brain barrier with ultrasound for the first time.

Pioneering companies like Alpinion Medical Systems, a leader in the development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and research ultrasound, are paving the way for researchers with devices like the high intensity focused ultrasound product, the VIFU 2000.

Alpinion’s integrated pre-clinical VIFU 2000 is designed for investigating a variety of high intensity focused ultrasound applications in small animal research, including tumor ablation, enhanced drug delivery, and cavitation effect studies, among others. The VIFU 2000 pairs with the E-Cube 9—available through SonoDepot—and E-Cube 12R.
