In a report released on July 8, 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed 7,300 insurance jobs were created during the month of June, a near 84 percent increase in job growth over the 4,300 jobs gained in May 2016.

According to the monthly Economic Situation Report, the insurance carriers and related activities subsector now sits at 2,604,700 employed insurance workers, while unemployment dropped down to 2.0 percent from 2.3 in May. Since the beginning of the year, employment in the insurance industry has increased by 1.08 percent or 27,900 jobs.

The insurance carriers and related activities subsector consists of professions that underwrite annuities and insurance policies, or facilitates the underwriting by selling insurance policies and related services. This includes claims adjusters, examiners and investigators; office managers, supervisors, and administrative support workers; insurance claims and policy processing, insurance sales agents, and insurance underwriters.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 287,000 in June with an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent. Last month, job growth mostly occurred in leisure and hospitality, healthcare and social assistance, and financial activities. The information sector also experienced an increase in employment, largely due to the return of workers from a strike.
