Telairity’s Nexgen BE8600 contribution encoders and IRDs to be installed in ENG/DSNG vehicles operated by Raycom stations

Everything considered, our decision was simple.

Telairity, the broadcast industry leader in H.264/MPEG4 encoding technology, announced today that Raycom Media has selected Telairity’s BE8600 contribution H.264/AVC video encoder and BE5503 IRD to support its transition to all high-definition field news.

Ranked by number of stations operated, employee-owned Raycom Media is the 5th largest broadcast group in the USA. Established in 1996 with 15 stations based in the southeastern US, Raycom has grown rapidly to operate 62 stations today in 20 states, spanning the country from West Palm Beach, FL, to Boise, ID, to Honolulu, HI.

According to Eric Bergman, Executive Director of Engineering for Raycom Media, the company has chosen to equip its nationwide fleet of over 100 microwave and satellite Electronic News Gathering (ENG) vehicles with the BE8600, based on its unique combination of performance, reliability, and service.

“No system we tested provided a better picture at a lower bitrate or with less latency. But the BE8600 alone combined top-of-class performance with reliability features like dual redundant power supplies, vibration-resistant construction, and wide temperature tolerance for dependable operation under harsh field conditions. Add to this equation, the unit’s highly affordable price and Telairity’s industry-leading service and support policies, and our decision was simple.”

The Telairity BE8600 Real Time Contribution Encoder offers state-of-the-art H.264/AVC video compression in a compact and cost effective half-width 1RU form factor. Sized to go just about anywhere, in addition to standard rack-mount use, this compact 5 lb. unit can easily sit on a desktop or table top, or fit into ENG vehicles of any size or type, including vans, minicars, satellite uplink trucks, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

The unit is also versatile enough to do just about any encoding task, including the most demanding low-latency applications, as well as all high-performance ENG, DSNG, mobile, and studio encoding tasks. In addition to archival high-bitrate 4:2:2 contribution-mode encoding for HD, the BE8600 supports low-bitrate 4:2:0 HD/SD modes for high-quality contribution links over crowded urban airways, where backhaul bandwidth is tightly constrained, and for direct-to-viewer distribution over MPEG-4 networks.

“Telairity is privileged to be a principal supplier of encoder technology to Raycom Media,” said Matt McKee, Telairity VP of Sales. “We’re pleased Raycom has chosen our unique technological approach and solutions, after an extensive evaluation process, as the best value available for high quality, reliable, and affordable encoding systems for ENG use.”
