Flexible working has grown considerably in recent years, and continues to be on the rise, with a reported eighty percent of companies offering at least one type of flexible work arrangement. Given this increased interest in flexible work arrangements from both employees and companies, FlexJobs analyzed over a hundred thousand job listings in over 50 job categories in its database to identify five of the top job categories where the number of flexible job postings has increased significantly over the last year.
Each of these job categories grew by more than 50 percent between July 2015 and June 2016. A “flexible job” is defined as a professional-level job that has a telecommuting, flexible schedule, freelance, or part-time component. The top reasons people seek flexible work include work-life balance, family, time savings, and commute stress.
“There unfortunately is still is a widespread misconception that jobs with work flexibility are low-level, unskilled, and unprofessional, or exclusive to certain conducive job categories like computer & IT, admin and sales,” said Sara Sutton Fell, CEO and founder of FlexJobs. “The truth is that professional flexible jobs are available in almost any career field, and the opportunities are growing as more and more companies realize the benefits of flexible work arrangements, such as cost savings, increased profitability, higher productivity, happier and healthier workers, and better retention among their employees.”
The top five job categories which have seen the most growth in flexible job postings in the past year--as well as specific employers and examples of their job listings and work flexibility the job offers--are as follows:
1. Government & Politics: U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of the Interior, and U.S. Department of Transportation have recently recruited for flexible jobs. Foreign affairs officer (telecommute), security specialist (freelance) and economic assistant (part-time, telecommute) are recent listings in the government & politics job category.
2. Engineering: Dell, CyberCoders, and Deloitte have recently recruited for flexible jobs. Consulting engineer (part-time, freelance), architect (telecommute) and power systems engineer (part-time) are recent listings in the engineering job category.
3. Project Management: Xerox, UnitedHealth Group, and Oracle have recently recruited for flexible jobs. Associate program manager (freelance), project manager-corporate marketing (telecommute), traffic coordinator (temporary) are recent listings in the project management job category.
4. Communications: IBM, YELP, and CBS Radio have recently recruited for flexible jobs. Public relations manager (telecommute), marketing executive (freelance), communications coordinator (part-time) are recent listings in the communications job category.
5. Travel & Hospitality: Hilton Worldwide, G6 Hospitality, BCD Travel have recently recruited for flexible jobs. Travel support case manager (alternative schedule), vacation counselor (freelance), global account manager (telecommute) are recent listings in the travel & hospitality job category.
