Wouldn't we save a great deal of heartache if we're able to find personality compatibility first? That's our company mission, said DatingSphere Founder Ming J. Li.

Amidst an industry increasingly focused on instant physical attraction, one online dating service is going against the grain. DatingSphere launched in August 2016 on a mission to challenge assumptions about what it means to date online. Attempting to combine old fashioned personal introductions with 21st Century connectivity, this startup relies on personal reviews from close friends, family members, and even exes to provide insight into a dater’s personality.
DatingSphere calls it the “Sphere of Trust” - it’s a collection of up to 10 people daters invite to the website and into their sphere of trust. They will then upload a recent photo together with the dater; highlight the personality type and traits they’ve observed from the time they’ve known the dater; share a personal story about a dominant trait or something most people don’t know about the dater; and verify key information about the dater. This personal review helps create the dater’s unique personality profile, used to curate verified matches based on personality compatibility.
“In finding their significant other, people are generally attracted to physical appearance first and hope they’re compatible after,” said DatingSphere Founder and UC Berkeley alumnus Ming J. Li. “This puts people in a difficult predicament as comfort and the dreaded biological clock force them to potentially settle with someone they’re not actually compatible with. Wouldn’t we save a great deal of heartache if we’re able to find personality compatibility first? That’s our company mission.”
DatingSphere is offering their services completely free until December 2016. Anyone familiar with other dating sites will find DatingSphere’s Sphere of Trust concept a compelling new approach to matchmaking. IOS and Android mobile apps are expected to launch early next year.
