People sometimes perceive philosophy to be a subject for the scholarly. However, in his debut novel, “A Sojourn Among the Avatars of Wisdom” (published by iUniverse), author Dudley Mecum gives philosophy a makeover as he repackages wisdom from renowned philosophers into one man’s heroic odyssey. The author is embarking on a marketing campaign to promote the book.
In the novel, Chris is on a quest to become a knight. As his quest unfolds, Chris faces enemies and foes that use him as a pawn to settle old scores. In an effort to overcome his enemies, Chris seeks advice from a cast of unexpected characters who dispense timeless wisdom.
The wisdom Chris receives represents principles from the world’s celebrated philosophers and modern sages. Through Chris’ journey, readers will learn how philosophical principles can be applied to their own personal trials.
“I have written my book in hopes that it can be enjoyed on various levels,” says Mecum. “The book is initially written for entertainment purposes, but it can also be used as a reference for understanding wisdom of the ages.”
Mecum explains that the book is “quadruple-use” because it serves to entertain, impart wisdom by including the sages’ quotes, employ various literary devices – such as symbolism, irony and foreshadowing – and pays tribute to Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement, by giving the protagonist his last name.
