The Special Needs Community Has Made News With Survey Highlighting Disabled Reporter During the 2016 Presidential Election Campaign
Agoura Hills, CA (PRWEB) August 16, 2016 -- A recent Bloomberg poll indicates that 83% of respondents were troubled by remarks made by presidential candidate Donald Trump about a disabled reporter. The survey followed a very poignant speech about the special needs community given by Anastasia Somoza at the Democratic National convention, and the recent anniversary of the passage of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These examples have opened up a national dialogue for people to take a better look at the unique needs and challenges facing this very extraordinary and oftentimes overlooked group. One person who has been making a difference in the area is Bonnie Schlachte, Founder and Director of the non-profit Ballet for All Kids.
Ballet for All Kids is a rare dance experience, offering classical ballet training to all children (and adults) as well as those with special needs including Autism, learning and emotional developmental disabilities such as behavioral issues, ADHD, anxiety disorders, neurological difficulties, or those that are hearing impaired, blind or non-ambulatory.
Students come from all over the Los Angeles and Ventura County areas to participate in their classes, with over 100 volunteers from both public and private schools. The philosophy behind the teaching is to embrace each student’s particular circumstances, honor their abilities, and celebrate their exceptional uniqueness.
According to Schlachte, “We are an all inclusive program that gives every child the opportunity to gain the benefits of a classical ballet education. Each person who participates in our program comes away with improved self-confidence, coordination, balance, poise and self esteem.”
In addition to teaching ballet, BFAK’s instruction includes tap, jazz, belly dancing, contemporary and more. The group has recently moved to a new facility in Agoura Hills. They also hold classes at the Los Angeles Ballet Academy located in Encino on Sundays. BFAK has now expanded to offer locations in New York, New York and in Norfolk, Virginia.
