SAE International announces a signed agreement with Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) for the translation of SAE’s technical standard J3016 (Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to On-Road Motor Vehicle Automated Driving Systems) into German language, as part of the new DIN SPEC 91340. The agreement deepens and enhances SAE International’s alliance with DIN and fortifies the acceptance of SAE automation levels as the global standard.
DIN SPEC 91340 was initiated by Audi to “establish the terminology for intelligent individual mobility and lay the foundation for fast implementation of new technologies in the urban environment” (ht tp://audi-urban-future-initiative.com/blog/audi-din-spec-norm-process-mobility) and aligns with SAE’s Smart/Mega Cities initiative led by SAE president Cuneyt Oge.

This development follows on the heels of two cooperative agreements between SAE and ISO: a provisional agreement with ISO to produce and distribute jointly-produced standards, and a content-sharing agreement between SAE J1939 and ISO 11783 regarding CAN bus communications.
SAE J3016 provides a taxonomy describing the full range of levels of automation in on-road motor vehicles.
