Boyd Industries CEO: Global Dental Equipment Market Projected to Reach $8.45 Billion by 2020

Growth is being driven by an aging population, the growing prevalence of dental disease, technological advances, and an increased demand for cosmetic dentistry.

Practitioners are routinely doing things today that twenty years ago—and in some cases, even ten years ago—were all but impossible.

The global market for dental equipment will rise from $6.081 billion in 2013 to $8.45 billion by 2020, according to a report from Grand View Research. Adrian LaTrace, CEO of Boyd Industries, a leading supplier of dental equipment and cabinetry, says, “This new report, along with similar findings from another recent study,(1) confirms what we’ve been seeing in the market over the past several years. Our customers, who are primarily orthodontists, pediatric dentists and oral surgeons, are upgrading their equipment, both to serve an overall rise in demand for dental services and to meet patients’ and their families’ expectations in terms of technology and comfort.”

The report from Grand View Research also found that an increased demand for aesthetic procedures has led to a spur in cosmetic dentistry. Increasing dental tourism, as patients travel to different countries to obtain procedures that are too expensive or unavailable at home, has also created increased demand for advanced equipment overseas. A close look at the data reveals that systems and parts represent the largest product segment in dental equipment, accounting for $2.2 billion of 2013’s market alone.

Another factor at work in the market, per LaTrace, is a growing public awareness of the prevalence—and the potential seriousness—of poor dental health, particularly in regards to dental caries (cavities). LaTrace notes that during recent decades, the common consensus worldwide had been that the incidence of dental caries had declined significantly and was continuing to decline. The dental community has prided itself on efforts that reduce dental caries, including the use of systemic and topical fluorides, toothpastes and sealants, along with improvements in diet, oral health education, and dental care.

However, recent studies have reported an alarming increase in the incidence of caries. According to a report from the United States Surgeon General, dental caries are the most common disease of children aged 5 to 17 years, being five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. In the U.S. alone, over 50% of five to nine-year-old children have at least one cavity or restoration, and this increases to 78% among 17-year-olds.(3)

“People want to reduce those numbers,” LaTrace said, “and they’re taking steps to do so. This, in turn, is beginning to increase the sheer percentage of young people going to see the dentist on a regular basis, which ultimately will help increase sales of dental equipment to practitioners focused on the treatment of children.”

A final factor in the growth of the dental equipment market, according to LaTrace—although only barely addressed in recent reports—is top of mind for the hundreds of dental practitioners with whom Boyd Industry is in regular contact.

“It’s what we refer to as ‘the new dentistry,’” he said. “Practitioners are routinely doing things today that twenty years ago—and in some cases, even ten years ago—were all but impossible. At the same time, the public is more and more aware of what can be done. They want the best, the newest, and the most comfortable patient experience they can get. We’re seeing a big increase in the amount of custom work we’re doing, because dentists come to us and say, ‘The operatory equipment have to reflect what we’re offering our patients. It’s got to be comfortable, it’s got to look good, and it’s got to work together. We don’t just need a chair or a cabinet; we need an environment.’ There’s no question in my mind that this same need—to offer the new dentistry—is helping to drive the growth in equipment sales.”
