Hawaii vein specialists proudly announce the availability of an exciting new treatment for varicose veins, the VenaSeal™ closure system. The VenaSeal™ system, developed by Medtronic and recently approved by the FDA, was first used in our Maui offices by Dr. Randall S. Juleff and his surgical assistant, Katie Carson, on July 29th. They expect it will become an important addition to their other state-of-the-art vein treatment procedures offered in Kauai, Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island.
The VenaSeal™ system is unique in that it is the only non-tumescent, non-thermal, and non-sclerosant procedure to permanently close varicose veins, and uses a proprietary medical adhesive to seal the diseased veins. The VenaSeal™ system has been proven in clinical trials to be safe, effective, and gentler than some other types of treatment. For example, it can be administered without the use of tumescent anesthesia, which avoids the discomfort of multiple needle sticks, and it eliminates the risk of nerve injury that is sometimes associated with thermal (heat-based) laser or radiofrequency treatments.
During the procedure, a Maui vein treatment specialist inserts a catheter directly into the diseased vein and guides it precisely into place using ultrasound imaging. The physician injects a special cyanoacrylate-based adhesive into the vein and then compresses it, which turns the adhesive into a solid to permanently seal the varicose vein.
The new VenaSeal™ system adds an important new option to the treatments available for varicose veins and other symptoms of venous reflux. As Dr. William Maisel, director of the FDA office that evaluated the new system, says, "Because the VenaSeal system does not incorporate heat application or cutting, the in-office procedure can allow patients to quickly return to their normal activities, and with less bruising."

Varicose Vein Treatment Options
Varicose veins and spider veins are quite common afflictions in the United States, affecting up to 30 million people. While women tend to suffer from vein disease more frequently than men, both sexes can be afflicted. Spider veins are usually smaller, web-like veins that might have a tangled appearance, while varicose veins are usually larger, twisted, bluish veins that are raised on the skin.
There are several safe and effective treatment options for varicose veins and spider veins, including the Venefit™ procedure, microphlebectomy, and sclerotherapy. All procedures are minimally invasive, meaning they can be performed on an outpatient basis in the doctor’s office. They all help restore both the health and beauty of the legs with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime.
