Unidesk 4 Brings Enterprise-Class Application and Image Management to VMware Horizon
Las Vegas, Nev (PRWEB) August 30, 2016 -- Unidesk® , the leader in application packaging and lifecycle management software for the digital workspace, announced today at VMworld 2016 that its award-winning Unidesk 4 solution now supports VMware Horizon. The redesigned Unidesk 4 breaks new ground in the areas of application compatibility, image optimization, login performance, scalability, resource utilization, and hybrid cloud support. VMware end-user computing customers can now confidently expand their virtual desktop deployments, accelerate time to value, and reduce deployment costs, while also being assured that their applications are “future-proof” should they decide to switch hypervisors or move to the cloud.
Unidesk 4 Capabilities
Unidesk is the inventor of application layering, which enables IT to package apps as independent virtual disks for fast, install-free delivery to users. Unidesk 4 adds these new industry-leading features:
- Unidesk Layered Images™ make Unidesk the only solution capable of 100% application compatibility and zero-impact login performance. By merging assigned OS and app layers into a standard disk image before Windows boots, Layered Images allow all apps, including agents, services, drivers, and the Windows OS itself, to be independently packaged, patched, and delivered.
- The Unidesk Connector for VMware Horizon View Composer leverages the image delivery capabilities of VMware’s native provisioning tool to eliminate patching inefficiencies common in VDI. Instead of managing an image for every Horizon pool and parent machine, IT only has to patch Windows and app layers once. Unidesk will automatically update the Layered Images and distribute them through Composer. Unidesk 4 also fully supports VMware Instant Clones and Virtual SAN.
- Unidesk Elastic Layering™ delivers personal and departmental apps at login based on directory attributes, eliminating the need to create a virtual desktop for every user and enabling smaller pools of virtual desktops to be customized on-demand.
- Unidesk Platform Layers™ enable the same Unidesk app layers to be deployed to different hypervisors and clouds. For the first time, IT can manage apps once across different platforms, migrate to new platforms without costly repackaging, and leverage the cloud for infrastructure-free app delivery and more affordable disaster recovery.
“Unidesk has enabled us to easily package and deliver all of our apps on one Windows 7 instance, even though all of our VMware Horizon users have very different requirements,” said Henrik Frank, Lead Infrastructure Architect for the Virtual Infrastructure Team at Amdocs. “As a global company with users in distributed offices, we are excited about Unidesk’s new ability to deliver custom apps at login, enabling us to offer a persistent user experience without a dedicated machine for every user. Being able to seamlessly move our apps and images from VDI to the cloud is another powerful feature that will help us future-proof our end user computing environment going forward.”
Availability
The new Unidesk capabilities for VMware Horizon, as well as integration with VMware Horizon View Composer, are being demonstrated this week at VMworld 2016 at the Mandalay Bay Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada at Unidesk Booth 2001. The new features are available for testing in the current release of Unidesk 4 and are expected to be generally available in October.
“We listened to our customers and partners and delivered a re-architected application management solution that meets the needs of even the largest enterprises and service providers,” said Chris Midgley, Unidesk Founder and CTO. “Unidesk 4 redefines what is possible with application layering technology and makes digital workspaces more flexible, agile, and cost-effective than ever before.”
