Unemployment rates dropped in July compared to the year previous in 279 of the 387 metropolitan areas, increased in 87 areas and remained unchanged in 21 areas, according to the Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment Summary report released by The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday, August 31, 2016.
The national unemployment rate in July was 5.1 percent, a 0.4 percent decrease from the 5.6 percent reported in July 2015. Eight areas had jobless rates of less than 3.0 percent and 5 areas had rates of at least 10 percent. In July, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 331 metropolitan areas, while employment decreased in 52 and remained unchanged in 4 areas.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota reported the lowest unemployment rate at 1.9 percent while together Yuma, Arizona and El Centro, California had the highest rates at 24.3 and 24.2 percent, respectively. Overall, 192 metropolitan areas had July jobless rates above the national unemployment rate of 5.1 percent, while 178 areas had rates below this rate and 17 areas had rates equal to the national average.
