"Front Page," a documentary-style show featuring host James Earl Jones (Star Wars), features the disease diabetes and efforts toward its prevention. According to the most recent data provided by the CDC, in 2014 22 million Americans suffer from diabetes. This number is 1.3% lower than those figures reported in 2013; however, of this number, 99% (21.9 million) of Americans with diabetes are adults age 18 and older.
The show focuses on the steps that need to be taken toward prevention of the disease. Some of the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of diabetes include engaging in a healthy and active lifestyle. This means being physically active and involved in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. The prevention of diabetes also includes eating health and weight control.
A focus on diabetes prevention is important in order to reduce the growing incidences of diabetes, particularly within the adult population. According to the CDC, people over the age of 45 or who are overweight should be tested regularly for the presence of diabetes. Prevention also entails understanding the risk factors associated with the disease, which includes:
- Family history of diabetes
- Being overweight or suffering from obesity
- Being a member of certain racial/ethnic groups
- Having high blood pressure
- Having a high rate of cholesterol
- Not engaging in regular physical activity
This show will look to highlight those activities helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing diabetes from becoming a significant health risk.
