An Innovation Ecosystem Builder Works with Trade Winds to Build a Global Network for Entrepreneurship

United Solutions, a leader in building Innovation Ecosystems with its cloud-based solution called bubblee™, is one of about 100 U.S. companies and organizations heading to Latin America for the U.S. Department of Commerce-led Trade Winds—Latin America trade mission and business forum. Trade Winds—Latin America features a three-day business forum in Santiago, Chile, plus optional trade mission stops in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. At each mission stop, attending companies will meet directly with government leaders, market experts, and pre-vetted potential business partners in the region.

"I was delighted to assist United Solutions in its promotion of bubblee™ in Mexico," said Teresa Verthein, a Commercial Specialist with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. "There’s a determined coalition of stakeholders in the Mexican public and private sectors that recognize how crucial supporting small and medium enterprises is to the country’s economy. This, along with existing policies to develop a thriving local innovation ecosystem, offer strong potential for technology platforms where local innovators and entrepreneurs can easily make the connections that will allow them to flourish. This technology is available in the market! It can help communities small and large build ecosystems that would otherwise take years to develop and level the playing field for small businesses. It is perfectly aligned with current Mexican initiatives to spur entrepreneurship and establish an information and knowledge society."

United Solutions is participating in the business forum in Chile, and mission stops in Mexico and Argentina. These countries are exploring innovative strategies and technologies to stimulate the knowledge economy and leverage the power of big data. bubblee™ enables a country to accomplish these goals by providing an cloud-based platform for building an innovation ecosystem. Studies show that network connectivity is the key ingredient for the growth of a small business ecosystem. bubblee™ connects the entrepreneur to both a local and an international market, allowing small businesses, which make us the backbone of any economy, to grow. In a developed country like the United States, for example, small businesses make up 99.7% of employer firms and 63% of net new private-sector jobs. Over 54% of US exports are done by small businesses. By leveraging new technologies, Latin American countries can build a thriving knowledge economy at home, stimulating local innovations and entrepreneurship, while harnessing the power of big data.

“I lived in Latin America for nearly four years, and I was impressed by the creativity and entrepreneurial energy of the people I met,” said Irna Hutabarat, who heads bubblee’s business development efforts. “Many entrepreneurs need a helping hand during the initial phases of their startup, particularly in winning their first customer. bubblee hopes to provide that helping hand by creating communities that help the small businesses grow. In many emerging economies, the wealth resides among the elite, and an entrepreneur at the bottom of the economic pyramid has little chance of becoming the next Bill Gates. bubblee levels this playing field, by giving visibility and high rankings to the true innovators, creating breakthrough market opportunities for the entrepreneur.”

“We are excited by the great opportunity and unique challenge that Latin America offers,” said David Nguyen, United Solutions’ Chief Executive Officer and an MIT Alumnus, who was himself a starving entrepreneur before building his multi-million dollar business. “Reaching the international audience is a dream for many small businesses. We are fortunate for the chance to make this dream a reality with the encouragement and support from the Department of Commerce.”

This is the ninth year the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Commercial Service has led Trade Winds. The mission brought 100 companies to Latin America in 2014, and supported more than $11 million in U.S. exports.

“The United States exported nearly $273 billion in goods in 2015 to the markets we’re visiting at Trade Winds,” said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service Arun Kumar. “The companies and organizations participating in Trade Winds will connect to the most promising business opportunities in the region, and we are proud to have such a strong delegation.”

Trade Winds is an important part of the United States’ Look South initiative, which encourages U.S. companies to explore opportunities with free trade agreement partners in Latin America. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced the initiative in January 2014.
