Hugh Kitchener, a retiree turned dedicated writer, has completed his new book “In the Realm of Yang”: a touching depiction of the tribulations and triumphs that occur in mixing the dynamic of love into the standard of expectations set by Chinese traditions, both in the past and present.
In this maiden voyage into fiction writing, Kitchener knew he was tackling a subject that many would deem difficult to relate to when he chose the setting of the Early Han Dynasty in Ancient China. Having lived in Sacramento and San Francisco, areas with a great knack for honoring Chinese heritage and keeping the culture alive amidst insistent American influence, he found the area to be an excellent setting for a more contemporary tale that would run parallel with the story he intended to write. “In lieu of writing solely about a love story that occurred in ancient China, I decided to create a modern story as well, one which makes it easier for the reader to engage in, and understand, a culture that existed over two-thousand years ago.”
Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Kitchener’s cultural tale entertains the reader on a surface level with its inviting stories of romance while it educates the reader indirectly by setting up constructs and rules that govern the behaviors of the characters in the stories in accordance with cultural expectation. Thereby, Chinese cultural lessons are taught both from the ancient dynasty perspective and that of the Chinese-American.
The formidable character of the wise and dominant Chinese father is an obstacle to be worked through in each of the two tales of love. Grad student Ts’ui-ying, who is in the second year of her five-year Visa in America, has difficulty keeping a promise she made to her father back in China not to get involved with an American man when she meets the attractive and kind Doctor Thomas Yee.
Princess Yuan, daughter of the first emperor of the Han Dynasty, has her own father drama to worry about when it is decreed by him that she should marry the leader of the Northern Barbarians as part of a peace agreement in spite of her established romantic relationship with Change Ao.
Readers who wish to experience these contrasting yet equally important love stories can purchase“In the Realm of Yang” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.
