CD-adapco Partners with Spike Aerospace to Develop Next Generation of Supersonic Business Jets

Spike Aerospace is using CD-adapco's STAR-CCM+ to reduce sonic boom and drive the design of the Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet.

CD-adapco, a Siemens business, is partnering with Spike Aerospace to develop the Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet, a state-of-the-art aircraft that promises to reduce flying times by half, through the use of its industry-leading computer aided engineering software tool, STAR-CCM+®.

CD-adapco joins Maya Simulation in partnering with Spike Aerospace as they attempt to make the next generation of supersonic business jets a reality. Recognizing the importance of aerodynamics for performance, design, and the ability to reduce sonic boom, Spike Aerospace believes STAR-CCM+ is the most efficient and effective engineering simulation software tool for this exciting project. This application will be highlighted during a September 22 complimentary webinar titled “Designing the Next Generation of Supersonic Business Jets with Low to No Sonic Boom.”

“Our CFD engineers found that the meshing capabilities in STAR-CCM+ were significantly better than other competing products and seemed a bit more intuitive and easier to use,” said Vik Kachoria, President and CEO of Spike Aerospace. “STAR-CCM+ is critical in any aerodynamic aircraft project as it has a number of tools that can help optimize the shape of the aircraft to minimize fuel burn, ensure stability and help the aircraft reach the performance goals we want to reach.”

Once the Spike S-512 is fully functional and cleared for takeoff in the early 2020s, it is expected to revolutionize business travel. The duration of routes such as New York to London and London to Dubai will be halved, enabling business travelers to better allocate their time and resources.

STAR-CCM+ is enabling Spike Aerospace to utilize the power of digitalization to achieve improved efficiency and quality while also ensuring optimized machine design. STAR-CCM+ allows Spike Aerospace to determine the aerodynamics of the aircraft throughout the process and into flight.
