American Institutes for Research (AIR) Vice President and Institute Fellow Mark Schneider will testify at a hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, entitled “Back to School: A Review of Tax Exempt College and University Endowments.”

The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. EDT in room 1100 of the Longworth House Office Building.
Schneider is expected to discuss the extent to which students attending private colleges and universities receive indirect public subsidies through tax exemptions that in some cases may dwarf the support students receive at public institutions of higher learning.

“This vast accumulation of wealth can be tapped to better serve the nation,” Schneider said. “University endowments are granted tax exempt status to allow them to serve the public interest. But the concentration of endowment wealth in so few institutions raises questions about the degree to which the public is well served.”

AIR will post a copy of Schneider’s prepared remarks when it is available.
