For 50 years, the ACM A.M. Turing Award has been recognized as the most prestigious technical award in the computing industry. In recognition of 50 years of the Award, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) today announced activities celebrating the ACM Turing Award and computing’s greatest achievements.

WHO: ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery (http://www.acm.org), is the premier global community of computing professionals and students with nearly 100,000 members in more than 170 countries interacting annually with more than 2 million computing professionals worldwide.

WHAT: ACM recognizes excellence and achievement through its renowned awards programs. The ACM Turing Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing,” was named in honor of Alan Mathison Turing (1912–1954), the British mathematician and computer scientist who articulated the mathematical foundations and limits of computing.

ACM is now celebrating 50 years of the Award through a number of activities, including:

  • A special conference commemorating 50 years of the ACM Turing Award, the prestigious Laureates who have received it, the developments and innovations stemming from their work, and a look ahead at the exciting innovations that will shape society in the future.
  • A new website (http://www.acm.org/turing-award-50), which will provide compelling content from computing luminaries of the past, present and future.
  • Infographics illustrating the influence of Turing’s work on the computing issues of today and how Turing Award Laureates have contributed to some of the technologies we use on a daily basis.
  • Published essays, bylines, blogs and Q&As by a panel of leading researchers and computing professionals. Subjects examined will include: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cryptography, the Future of the Internet and the Internet of Things.

WHEN and WHERE: New content will be shared continuously at http://www.acm.org/turing-award-50 and in publications, blogs, forums and conferences throughout the world. The 50 Years of the ACM Turing Award Celebration will be held June 23-24, 2017, at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.
