Princeton Community Hospital Solves MEDITECH Printing Challenges with PrinterLogic
St. George, Utah (PRWEB) September 21, 2016 -- PrinterLogic, a leading Enterprise Print Management solution, announced today that Princeton Community Hospital has deployed PrinterLogic’s Print Management software to eliminate the health organization’s print servers, simplify front end and MEDITECH electronic health record (EHR) printing.
Princeton Community Hospital makes use of the popular MEDITECH EHR information system to store patient records, schedule appointments and equip its medical staff with vital information. Yet, despite its many benefits, MEDITECH has one requirement that proved to be more hassle than the organization could tolerate: print servers.
To ensure the organization could leverage the many benefits of MEDITECH without suffering print management headaches, Princeton Community Hospital selected PrinterLogic to eliminate its print servers while enhancing management capabilities.
Based in Princeton, West Virginia, Princeton Community Hospital's 267-bed facility is not unlike many medical institutions around the world. Along with its reliance on MEDITECH, it maintains a fleet of approximately 1,000 computers and 700 printers for a staff of 160 physicians and around 1,100 employees in a distributed environment consisting of a primary central facility with twenty satellite offices and practices. But Princeton Community Hospital struggled with print management in this kind of environment for many years, mostly on account of the limitations and shortcomings of its two MEDITECH-required print servers.
"MEDITECH is a great EHR system, but one of the big problems is printing," says Jessica Pennington, a server administrator at Princeton Community Hospital. "Our printers are both onsite and offsite, and we have just about every kind you can think of. And administering all the different drivers for all those different devices across so many different operating systems can be a beast. MEDITECH hates dealing with the different drivers."
Along with backend printer and driver management being a chore for administrators, frontend users regularly had to deal with printing downtime and lost productivity.
"For reasons we could never pinpoint, all of our printers on our background servers would time out and go offline, and we would have to reboot our servers to get them to refresh the printers," Pennington says. The root issues could broadly be traced back to incompatibilities between the MEDITECH system and the print servers, leaving Princeton Community Hospital and its IT team with one aim: "We wanted to get rid of our Windows Print Server."
Pennington and her team began looking into a new print management solution that would enable them to eliminate print servers from its environment without jeopardizing MEDITECH functionality. Ideally, they wanted a solution that would not merely substitute print servers but would actually enhance the stability and ease of management of the organization's print environment.
"As soon as we saw the features and benefits of PrinterLogic, we stopped looking," she says. "We’d found exactly what we were after."
Safely eliminating print servers
After a smooth roll-out and PrinterLogic's seamless integration with the MEDITECH EHR system, the organization eliminated its two print servers while gaining the effortless print management it sought.
"PrinterLogic has given us a wonderful, centralized management console," says Pennington. "We have gone from a print server that we had to manage locally to a solution that we can now manage centrally. We've gone from trying to control our printers hospital-wide to where I can do it at a single desktop."
And the new print management solution hasn't just introduced improved ease of administration. It has resulted in unprecedented uptime and printing availability throughout the print environment.
"We've fixed so many MEDITECH print problems with PrinterLogic," she says. "We have not rebooted a background server for a print issue since we started using PrinterLogic."
Simplified print management, simplified printer installation
Admins aren't the only ones who have benefitted from PrinterLogic's user-friendly approach to print management. Princeton Community Hospital's service desk staff and end users have been delighted with the simplified process of printer installation, which no longer takes as much time and avoids common installation errors.
"If somebody needs a printer, instead of the service desk having to actually go to where the user is located, they can just send the user the link and it will just perform the printer install for them. It saves the user time, and it saves the service desk time while keeping the same level of oversight," said Pennington.
Focusing on patients, not printers
With its print servers eliminated and its problems with MEDITECH printing solved, Princeton Community Hospital is no longer wrestling with the minutiae of print management and dealing with downtime. The organization continues to use the MEDITECH EHR system as before but now enjoys a print environment with centralized management, simplified printer installation and unparalleled availability.
"It means that our medical and administrative staff can continue to deliver first-rate customer service by focusing on patients rather than printers."
