Students Can Win More Than $10,000 in Cash Prizes

Modo Labs, Inc., provider of the leading mobile engagement platform for universities and corporations that empowers both technical and non-technical staff to quickly create campus and enterprise apps, today announced that it will be hosting a first-of-its-kind app development event for students at Arizona State University, Florida State University, The George Washington University, Harvard University and the University of Notre Dame. The Great Mobile Appathon will take place in October, and challenge students from all majors and with any level of technical skill, to create innovative mobile apps that will enhance campus life at their college or university. Students are being encouraged to create apps on anything from academic advising, to student social forums and events, to financial tips and tricks, and will be limited only by their creativity.

Modo Labs launched this competition as a way to show students that mobile app development is not limited only to those with coding skills. In addition, it gives all students the chance to solve important real-world problems through the ubiquitous mobile device. The competition also benefits the participating universities by giving them a great opportunity to connect and engage with their students, while crowdsourcing new mobile app ideas and features from the primary users of their mobile campus app.

All of the student apps will be created on Modo Labs’ Campus Engagement platform. The platform empowers any person, with any academic background, to quickly create extraordinary mobile apps. Intuitive and powerful authoring tools make it easy for non-developers to dynamically create a sophisticated, highly curated, and one-of-a-kind mobile app experience, that can include pre-built modules, custom user interfaces and content, advanced workflow and user experience, feed based data, information and media, in virtually any design imaginable.

University winners will be awarded a $3,000 cash prize for first place and $1,500 for second. One national winner will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize, which will be awarded on October 27th at EDUCAUSE 2016 in Anaheim, CA. Participating universities will also have the opportunity to include selected student-created apps as permanent modules in their main university app.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with top institutions around the country to facilitate a one-of-a-kind competition. The best mobile campus app ideas come from students, so we are also very excited to see the event results and review the apps,” said Stewart Elliot, Modo Labs’ CEO. “Creativity and passion can come from anywhere in an university, and Modo Labs is providing an opportunity to realize this untapped potential.”

Ken Baldauf, Director of Florida State University’s Program in Interdisciplinary Computing, added, “Students have a lot of great ideas for improving the college experience with mobile apps. The Great Mobile Appathon provides them with an opportunity to develop those ideas in groups, using design thinking methods, and implement them on a developer-friendly platform without any coding. This is the kind of experiential learning opportunity has a big impact on students, with the added bonus of discovering new apps to serve our campus community."

The Appathon will kick off on Oct 1-2 at The George Washington University, and then take place at the following schools:

Florida State University, October 8-9
Harvard University, October 8-9
University of Notre Dame, October 8-9
Arizona State University, October 15-16
