San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 13, 2016 -- Whether you are a daily commuter or just a casual driver, safety on the road is a major concern. Instamotor, a local marketplace app for buying and selling cars, looked at data from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation to compile this study on driver safety.
Using the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, or FARS, they revealed stunning discrepancies in fatal crash rates of U.S. states as well as peak accident times and days of the week. The most alarming fact that the study found, however, is that October has the most fatal crashes out of any month of the year. In fact, it has over 1,000 more fatal crashes than the lowest month of February.
Aside from obvious trends like driving in daylight versus night driving, or the effects of alcohol, the data revealed risks that are harder for drivers to recognize in their everyday commute.
Other highlights from the study include:
- Tuesday is the safest day of the week: Tuesday had the lowest number of fatal crashes. This number jumped 34% on the highest day, Saturday.
- The safest time to drive during the week is 3 a.m. - 6 a.m.: Fatalities at 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. on a weekend are more than double the rate than at 3 a.m. - 6 a.m.
- Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the safest states to drive: Both states have the least fatalities at 4.9 fatalities per 100k population. The highest is Wyoming at 25.7 fatalities per 100k population.
- Safest driving age for males is 55-59: When comparing men and women, Instamotor found that women were at their lowest risk of fatal crashes at age 40-44.
“It’s also always important for a used car buyer to examine their car’s background prior to purchasing. But no matter how safe the car is, however, there are certain variables that will always remain out of the control of drivers,” says Val Gui, Instamotor’s Founder and COO. “Safety should always be the focus. The best thing to do is to be aware of the trends and remain alert.”
